G-dly Sorrow
by PJ

We live in a world where everything is instant. Instant news. Instant communication. Instant food. Instant money transferral. The need for instant has carried over into our relationships where people demand instant responses, instant answers, etc.

In a society where instant results are the measure, we begin to carry over into our relationship with G-d this same mentality. We want instant healing, instant turn arounds, instant blessings. Many people become cold and angry when G-d doesn't respond.

We come before the L-rd in prayer and repent of our sin and expect instant erasure and then we go right back out and do the same thing. Why? Because we are not sorry for the sin. We may be sorry for the results we're having but we're not sorry for the sin.

We desire the benefits and blessings of the salvation found in Yeshua. We desire the healings and the restorations. But its not very often many stop and have g-dly sorrow for the sins they commit.

Today I see many people, many congregations, focusing upon the greater glory to come, the blessing of Avraham, the good things G-d can do for them. But they've completely missed the heart issues that are blocking these things. They don't come with g-dly sorrow to G-d allowing Him to bring them to repentance that leads to salvation.

I reached a point with my walk with Yeshua that I don't want the same input because it hasn't worked. People can sermonize all they want about the greater glory but the only way to it is to go lower. I want to be clean before my L-rd.

I am here to remind you today that sin is a great offense. It might be our sin, sin of our family or sin of our ancestors but sin is a violation against our G-d. Sin hurts our G-d. Sin is a killer. Sin pays with death. And it was our sin that Yeshua bore on the Cross that caused Him to die.

Imagine how our G-d considers us picking up the very thing that killed Yeshua. After the great sacrifice and the great price for payment of that sin we go and pick it up and offend Him and then we demand instant forgiveness and go right back out and do it again. Then we come with great audacity demanding the blessing of Avraham.

The words "I'm sorry" don't erase a thing. In fact, we speak those words so often they are meaningless. Only g-dly sorrow can break up the hard, stony ground of hearts. You can't have true repentance without g-dly sorrow and without true repentance you have no forgiveness.

I learned something many years ago that I live by. I learned that it is useless to con G-d. You would not believe how many religious folks this annoys because they've become professionals at hiding sin. In attempting to con G-d with hiding my sin, I only hide it from myself and never get forgiveness. It's the measure I have learned to use. I just confess to Him the truth and I even tell Him when I am and am not sorry about what I did. That's when He can bring me to g-dly sorrow, repentance and ultimately get me to a place of victory.

I remember one day I lived alone and in this tiny apartment with no money and all I had to eat was one package of instant oatmeal. I sat down at the table for dinner and I bowed my head to pray over this bowl of instant oatmeal and I started to speak when out of my mouth came, "I am sorry, I cannot thank You. I am not grateful for this at all!"

Honesty is a measure G-d can appreciate. He IMMEDIATELY replied to me, "Stand up!" He walked me around the perimeter of that apartment and asked me, "Are you thankful you don't have a storm pouring rain on your head? Are you thankful no one is here mistreating you? Are you thankful you have a bed to sleep in? Are you thankful you are in good health?" This continued for quite some time and when He was finished......I was in tears.

I was in g-dly sorrow for my ungrateful heart. And suddenly I WAS grateful for the bowl of instant oatmeal. I bowed my head to pray again in true repentance and I heard a noise at my front door and someone had slid $20 under the front door. To this day, I have no idea who did such a thing because no one knew my need except Yeshua. And He said, "Now go out and get what you want to eat."

2 Corinthians 7:9-11 AMP says, "Yet I am glad now, not because you were pained, but because you were pained into repentance (that turned you to God); for you felt a grief such as God meant you to feel, so that in nothing you might suffer loss through us or harm for what we did.

For godly grief and the pain God is permitted to direct, produce a repentance that leads and contributes to salvation and deliverance from evil, and it never brings regret; but worldly grief (the hopeless sorrow that is characteristic of the pagan world) is deadly (breeding and ending in death).

For (you can look back now and observe what this same godly sorrow has done for you and has produced in you; what eagerness and earnest care to explain and clear yourselves (of all complicity in the condoning of incest), what indignation (at the sin), what alarm, what yearning, what zeal (to do justice to all concerned), what readiness to mete out punishment (to the offender)! At every point you have proved yourselves cleared and guiltless in the matter."

When we are not pained by g-dly sorrow and grief and abhorred by our sin and offense to the Almighty G-d, we will just keep on repeating it. We become calloused and hard and before long that sin just becomes a habit. After that no sin looks so bad, and after that, we wind up sick and don't know why or someone in our family is in trouble and we don't know why or we don't have enough but don't know why but the truth is sin is paying wages of death.

What if ADONAI acted toward us as we deserved? What if to bring us to g-dly sorrow He removed His Spirit? What if to bring us to g-dly sorrow He just backed up and gave us our own way? It's terrifying to even consider. But we take Him for granted. We wrong Him and think nothing of it.

King David cried out to ADONAI when Natan the prophet came to him after his affair with Bat-Sheva. Tehillim/Psalm 51 records David's prayer to the L-rd. Verses 10-12 AMP say, "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right, perservering, and steadfast spirit within me."

It's time to take that secret sin to G-d and get on your face and get honest with G-d and be sorry for it. For some of you it's the only way out of that sickness or disease. For others of you it's the only way out of that great guilt you secretly carry. And for some of you it's the only way out of the depression and mental torture.

To get to g-dly sorrow you must be honest with G-d and yourself. G-dly sorrow works in us repentance to bring us to salvation from the consequences of sin. Allow Him to bring you to salvation in every area of your life today by this process. It might be painful but at the end you will be able to say, "I am healed. I am delivered. I am rescued. I am whole."
